It seems odd to be talking about skiing in the summer sunshine – but just a few weeks ago, 17 of our girls were whizzing down the slopes at Sunday River in the state Maine, along with Miss Hudson and Mr Farmer. Fortunately, the bears were all in hibernation!
Split across eight interconnected peaks, Sunday River resort boasts 135 trails, including almost 300 acres of developed tree skiing.
Miss Hudson said: “The snow conditions were unbelievable. We were skiing on fresh powder down beautiful tree-lined pistes. All the girls got their ski legs by the end. A lot of them had ski cams and so we have some good crashes on film!”
One skier who would rather not have crashed was Megan Fox (Y7), who very unfortunately suffered a buckle fracture to her leg on day two and spent the rest of the week on crutches. Not that it stopped her bowling! The apres ski included activities such as snow tubing (using giant inner tubes as sleds) and swimming in the indoor pool at the hotel.
On the way back, the girls were lucky enough to stop off for a night in New York for some sight-seeing and shopping.
“There was an audible gasp from the girls as we entered Times Square,” Miss Hudson said. Another lasting memory was the view from the top of the Empire State Building: “We were up there at 10pm on a beautifully clear night. The light was just amazing.”
Although ice skating in Central Park was cancelled, thanks to a downpour, the girls managed to fit in a trip on the Staten Island Ferry for a view of the Statue of Liberty, a visit to the 9/11 memorial site and of course, some precious mall time.
All in all, a very memorable trip – especially for those girls who ‘did the double’ and went on to join the Adcote Italian trip over the Easter holiday!
